The M142 HIMARS is the abbreviation for High Mobility Artillery Rocket System. It is a multiple rocket launcher designed for the American Army.

This program was launched in the late 1980s. In 1993, a truck chassis is designed and tests begin. The manufacturer is LOCKHEED MARTIN.

Production began in 1998 and over 500 units were built.

More than 360 were delivered to the US Army. Others were delivered to the United Arab Emirates, Poland, Romania and Singapore.

In 2021, the U.S. Army placed a new order for more units to have more than 540 M142 HIMARS in service by 2028.

The M142 HIMARS can launch 6 missiles with precision over a range of 80 kilometers. Other munitions can go up to 150 kilometers. It uses the same basket of 6 rockets as the M270 MLRS.

During the 2022 conflict of Russia against Ukraine, the US Government delivered 20 M142 HIMARS. 18 will be added to the first ones from the beginning of 2023.
