The LUCHS which means LYNX in German, is a wheeled reconnaissance armored vehicle. The vehicle was first developed by PORSCHE from 1968 to 1974 and finished by Thyssen-Henschel.
Its serial production started in May 1975. In 1977, 408 vehicles were built for the Ferman Army, the Bundeswehr.
The pilot is in front and on the left, the co-pilot, who also acts as a radio operator, in the back on the left, the turret is in the center, the engine in the back on the right.
The LUCHS moved at 90 kms/h in forward or reverse and has a range of 800 kilometers.
The weapon pointed in site of - 15 ° and + 60 ° and in azimuth on 360 °. A 7.62 mm machine gun was mounted on the turret and had a supply of 1,000 rounds. The Rheinmetall TS7 turret was armed with a Rheinmetall Mk 20 Rh 202 dual-feed gun. 375 rounds were available in the turret.
It was deployed by the German Army in the Balkans from 1995 until 2004, for UN-mandated peacekeeping missions in Croatia for IFOR, SFOR and EUFOR, as well as in Kosovo with KFOR.
Totally amphibious, the LUCHS propelled itself at 9 km/h thanks to two steerable propellers placed at the rear of the vehicle on both sides.
The last 68 examples were withdrawn from active service in 2009.
