The VBL is an amphibious four-wheel-drive armored vehicle designed by bodybuilder PANHARD in the early 1980s.
VBL equipped with Milan missile
In 1978, the French Army General Staff (EMAT) launched a call for projects to design a wheeled armored vehicle weighing less than 3.5 tons for reconnaissance and anti-tank missions.
On February 15, 1985, the PANHARD prototype won the tender and was given the name VBL. Fifteen pre-production VBLs were delivered to the French Army between June and October 1988, for testing in all possible conditions: extreme cold, heat endurance, etc.
The VBL has taken part in all French military operations since the 1990s.
VBL propeller
Its propeller enables it to cross rivers. Its water speed is 5.4 km/h.
More than 2,300 were built. It has a range of over 600 kilometers. Road speed is 95 km/h.
Its crew consists of three men.
The PANHARD coachbuilder developed 13 versions of this model.
The VBL will be replaced by the PVP (Petit Véhicule Protégé) in 2008.
