The DCL recovery tank is a recovery tank from the company NEXTER, formerly GIAT Industrie, based on the chassis of the LECLERC tank and the recovery elements of the German Büffel recovery tank.
Developed to replace the French Army's AMX-30 D, it is called DNG (In French: Dépanneur Nouvelle Génération) by NEXTER and DCL (Dépanneur du Char Leclerc) by the French Army. With a range of 700 kilometers, its road speed is 65 km/h. Its combat weight is 56 tons and it has a crew of 3 people.
Its primary role is to recover tanks weighing more than 50 tons and to evacuate them out of the combat zone. But it can also repair them (thanks to its crane capable of detouring a tank) and serve as an engineering machine thanks to its shovel. It has a 12.7mm machine gun as its defensive armament.
The development of the LECLERC recovery tank started in September 1991. The first example was produced in 1993. 20 DCLs are in service with the French Army, including one that accompanied the 13 LECLERC tanks in southern Lebanon as part of UNIFIL. 46 NEXTER-built DNGs, under the designation ARV (Armoured Recovery Vehicle), were purchased by the United Arab Emirates and are currently in service with their army.
