Videos of TIGERS in Action

In 1984, the German and French governments defined their
their requirements for a multi-role battlefield helicopter.

After a long and unsuccessfulfruitful gestation period and because of its high cost, the programme was first cancelled
cancelled in 1986, but resumed the following year. In November 1989, Eurocopter was awarded a contract to manufacture five prototypes, including a German anti-tank version and a French escort version. The first prototype flew on 27 April 1991. .

When the Helicopter divisions of Aérospatiale and MBB merged in 1992 to form the Eurocopter Group, the Tiger programme was integrated.

The helicopter made its first major public appearance in the 1995 James Bond film Goldeneye, where the
prototype is an essential part of the plot (it should be noted, however, that the real EC 655 Tiger does not have an "ejectable cockpit", only
The Russian Kamov KA50 Hokum helicopter is the only one with a pilot ejection system).

Series production began in March 2002. The first EC 655 Tiger to be delivered (HAP 2001) was handed over to the Franco-German(EFA) of the French Army Light Aviation in April 2005.
The unit cost of this helicopter is 32 million euros (twice that of an NH90).

In December 2001, Australia placed an order
an order for 22 Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters (ARH), with a gun turret, rockets and American Hellfire air-to-surface missiles. Part of the assembly will take place on site.

At the end of 2007, the EHAP (Protection Support Helicopter Squadron) of the 5e RHC (Combat Helicopter Regiment) has 4 HAP Tigers out of the 8 that the squadron will when the squadron is complete. Eventually, the regiment will have 16 and the 4th RHFS (Special Forces Helicopter Regiment), also based in Pau, will use Pau will use 4 of them. 8 helicopters will be delivered in 2009. (17 have been delivered to the French Army at the end of 2008)

The EC 665 Tiger will only be operational in the French Army (5th Combat Helicopter Regiment in Pau)
in December 2008, following its tactical testing phase and naval naval standard. The Mistral boat was certified on 9 December 2009, followed by live firing the next day. followed the next day by live air-to-sea and air-to-ground firing of rockets and cannon on the firing ranges on Île du Levant (during the day) and at the Canjuers Canjuers camp (by night).

Its excellent manoeuvrability (which its composite airframe, enabling it to manoeuvre nimbly through different to move nimbly through the various theatres of operation, particularly particularly in mountainous terrain.

The Tiger reaches speeds of 280 km/h with an exceptional range of of 800 km, without additional delivery tanks.

Thanks to its recent design, it requires very little maintenance, which can be carried out directly in the theatre of
theatre of operations with a team of 4 or 5 people, four or five times smaller than than for competing helicopters. As with most combat helicopters, the pilot and gunner are positioned one behind the other, which reduces the aircraft's width and therefore its vulnerability to frontal enemy fire. The gunner is positioned at the rear of the aircraft. In addition, to improve his visibility, his seat is slightly higher than that of the pilot. the pilot's seat.

The first operational deployment operations took place on 27 July 2009 when three HAP aircraft from the French Army's 5th Combat Helicopter (Regiment Aviation Légère de l'Armée de l'Armée de France) were seconded to the French Forces in Afghanistan.

It was deployed in the SAHEL region as part of Operation BARKHANE to combat local terrorist groups and support ground troops.

The French Army also uses it to support the NH 90 troop transport.
