The Berlin Wall, "wall of shame" for West Germans and "anti-fascist protection wall" according to East German propaganda, was erected in the middle of Berlin from the night of August 12 to 13, 1961 by the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was trying to stop the growing exodus of its inhabitants to the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG)

More than a simple wall, it is a complex military device with two 3.6-meter high walls with a sentry walk, 302 watchtowers and alarm devices, 14,000 guards, 600 dogs.

About 900 GDR nationals lost their lives trying to cross it, with East German border guards and Soviet soldiers not hesitating to shoot the fugitives, and more than 3,200 were arrested.
